Busan

Getting to know Busan

Busan is situated on Korea’s beautiful southern coast. The country’s second largest city, Busan offers a great mix of urban sophistication and natural beauty. Whether it’s a big city getaway with shopping, museums and fine dining or an outdoor adventure taking in the famous beaches, beautiful parklands or coastal hikes, Busan is a city that can fulfil the desires on any holiday wish list.

Busan has a population of more than 3 million people and the glittering skyscrapers and bustling shopping districts are a testament to the city’s thriving economy. The world’s largest department store can be found here along with several other major shopping districts. Traditional markets still remain an important fixture in this ultra-modern city offering up everything from fresh seafood and produce to the favourite local dishes and popular regional cuisine. Busan is a city filled with culture and the arts and boasts some of Asia’s finest art, history and maritime museums as well as the celebrated Busan International Film Festival. Stunning temples with angled roof tops and colourful façades provide a rare look back at the region’s rich past, made to look all the more impressive when viewed from the modern day city. Busan is a place that embraces both its heritage and its modern identity.

Busan residents love the outdoors too. Because of its mild, sub-tropical climate, there’s no better place in Korea to enjoy the beach. Gwangalli and Haeundai are just two of the lovely beaches found here. Soft white sands, moderate waves and lovely seaside views make for a great day out while trendy cafes, restaurants and shops can be found nearby for a convenient break from the sun and surf. Other great outdoor activities include hiking in the nearby mountains or visiting one of the many nature reserves or hot springs.

Districts

Busan consists of 16 separate districts. Haeundae District is located in the eastern part of the city and is a popular beach and resort area where many international tourists stay. The district is considered to have the best beaches and there are many tourist attractions located nearby.

Suyeong District directly to the west is where Gwangalli Beach and the beautiful Gwangan Bridge are located. Like Haeundae, there are many high-rise hotels found here. Suyeong is also a central transfer point on the subway to areas throughout the city.

Things to do

Yonggungsa Temple

One of the most awe-inspiring sites in Busan is Yonggungsa Temple. Located along the sea on the jagged cliffs of a small bay, the temple offers both dramatic scenery yet peaceful surroundings. The temple features lovely buildings, an impressive three story pagoda and important statues. Visiting the temple at sunrise or during a full moon is especially memorable as is a springtime visit during cherry blossom season.

Busan Tower and Yongdusan Park

The 118 metre high Busan Tower is located in the beautifully manicured Yongdusan Park right in the city centre. Hike up the hill or take the escalator near to the base of Busan Tower. The park is filled with many native plants and trees, colourful flower beds and stone memorials. Proceed up the tower to the observation deck and enjoy an expansive view of the city skyline and deep blue sea.

Busan Museum

Visit the Busan Museum for a fascinating look at Busan’s cultural history from pre-historic times to the modern era. View interesting exhibits and ancient artefacts in this impressive multi-story site where history comes alive.

Shinsegae Department Store

Busan has many wonderful stores, boutiques and shopping districts, but Shinsegae is worth visiting as it’s said to be the world’s largest department store. The centre also features a spa, ice rink, cinemas and a well known basement food court.

Accommodations

As a popular beach and holiday destination, Busan offers excellent choice in accommodation. If you’re looking to be pampered, choose from beachside hotels or luxury resorts and spas in Haeundae. Much of the city’s nightlife can also be found here. Most properties offer both city and ocean views.

There are also motels, hostels and backpacker rooms near the beach in Haeundae but even here, reservations should be made as far in advance as possible, especially during the popular beach season or during the city’s famous international film festival. Moderately priced accommodation can also be found in the city centre.

Transportation

Depending on your accommodation location and whether you are travelling on rush hour, you can easily get around in the city by metro, bus and taxis. The Busan-Gimhae Light Rail Transit line takes you to the Gimhae airport.

If you are planning a trip to other cities in Korea, there are several rail lines which connect Busan to other major cities such as Seoul, Daejeon and Daegu. The high speed KTX trains take up only approximately 150 minutes from Busan to Seoul.
